Howard Rose

Howard was one of the original members of the BHHS nearly 30 years ago and initially brought the Stallion Wineberg to the UK. In the early days, Howard, supported by the BHHS Committee, was joined by Dr Ludwig Christmann from the Hannoveraner Verband and they travelled the UK grading mares and branding foals.
Sally Rose, Howard’s daughter mentioned that Dr Christmann was a great friend to her Father who spent many occasions in Germany with him and his family.
On speaking to Dr Christmann he said “I am very sorry to hear this sad news. Howard was one of the pioneers of the Hanoverian in England with his first stallions Wineberg, Galvano and later Medoc. In the 1980s he was a branding representative for the Hannoveraner Verband and accompanied me on many trips to England. He was a very good horseman who loved the Hanoverians and a great person who helped to build the breed in the UK. I will always have very fond memories of him.”
Howard often visited Germany and initially bought Wineberg back to the UK, followed shortly afterwards by Galvano and several broodmares. In 1994, Howard decided to go back to Germany to buy a modern Hanoverian Stallion and visited Celle to watch the 300-day test.
Howard decided that the dark bay Stallion, Medoc, was the Stallion he wanted but he was destined for the State Stud at Celle. After lengthy discussions the Committee of the Hannoveraner Verband shook Howard’s hand and told him that they had decided to let Medoc stand in Great Britain, their reason was because Howard was one of the founder members of the British Hanoverian Society and was often seen touring the UK with his wife Valerie.
Sally commented that “Medoc’s first foal in the UK won every County Show and went on to win the BHHS Supreme Champion. His foals were fantastic to train and Red Baron, ridden by Zara Philips is a prime example of this”.
Howard Rose passed away peacefully on Wednesday 17 April 2019 aged 76. Beloved husband of Valerie greatly loved father and father-in-law of Sally and Robert. A much-adored grandfather to Oliver and Charlotte, loving godfather of Kelly and lifelong friend of Richard.
