Change of Ownership
Firstly, congratulations on the purchase of your new horse. Under the Horse Passport (England) Regulations, you must register a change of ownership with the relevant Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO) within 30 days of purchase.
The British Hanoverian Society can change ownership for:
- Hanoverian horses
- Other German breed societies
Please make sure you complete all steps below.
What You Need To Do
- Completed Change of Ownership Form (download from the bottom of this page and complete)
- Sign the back of the Change of Ownership Certificate (also signed by the seller)
- If the Certificate of Ownership is missing, include:
- Passport number (826006********* or DE*************)
- Name and address of the seller
- Copy of the purchase receipt with sellers signature
- Receipt must include:
- Passport number
- Microchip number
- Date of birth
- Horse’s name
- Buyer & seller names and addresses
- Buyer & seller signatures
- ☐ Extra info if available (we may need to contact previous owners)

Registering a Name (If Your Horse Is Unnamed)
- We can register a name for your horse
- Name must start with the same initial as the sire
- Once registered, the name cannot be changed
- Prefixes can only be registered if you are the breeder
Fees
- Change of Ownership: £40 for members, £45 for non-members
- Name Registration (if required): £40
